When planning a vacation, many people overlook travel insurance. But it should be on every vacation to-do list. The reality is that you never know what may happen while you’re away. Travel insurance helps protect your finances from a variety of risks, which may include:

  • Property damage, loss or theft
  • Trip cancellation due to an emergency, such as a natural disaster or death in the family
  • Medical expenses
  • And more

Before you even leave home, you’ve probably spent a sizeable chunk of money on flights, hotel reservations and activity reservations. If a pipe bursts in your home the day before you’re set to leave and you have to cancel your trip to deal with the mess, you’d probably be out a lot of money that you’ve already prepaid. Travel insurance is designed to come to the rescue in similar instances.

But apart from property and trip expense coverage, one of the most valuable aspects of travel insurance is the medical coverage. This is especially true if you’re traveling overseas and your health insurance won’t cover you while abroad.

Look for a travel insurance policy with a high medical coverage limit. If you break your leg while hiking, you can quickly burn though $20,000 of coverage, so coverage in the range of $100,000 is something to consider. A good policy will not only cover your medical expenses, but will also cover emergency evacuation so you can seek medical attention in your home country.

However, it’s important to note that this medical coverage is only for emergencies; it should not be considered a replacement of your healthcare. General checkups and preexisting conditions are not often covered overseas.

Additionally, any injuries and illnesses resulting from reckless behavior—as defined by your insurance provider—may be excluded as well. This often includes accidents sustained while skydiving, bungee jumping or participating in other extreme sports, along with drug- or alcohol-related incidents.

Bring along copies of your reservations/tickets, as well as your packing list. If a medical emergency does occur, hold onto receipts associated with your treatment. All of this documentation will help streamline the claims process, should you need to file one.
