We in Pennsylvania certainly did not feel the 4.0 earthquake that rattled Maine and was felt all the way to Boston, but we sure were reminded of the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Virginia last year and was felt in our neck of the woods, Southeastern PA.
We are reminded that quakes can happen anywhere, at any time, without warning. What a vivid demonstration of the importance of being properly insured.
Does your homeowners insurance cover earthquake damage?
An ERIE homeowners policy does not provide any coverage for damage due to earthquakes. The good news is that there is coverage available that can be easily added. In areas where earthquakes are uncommon, the coverage is very inexpensive.
Why is it so important? Well, according to the Institute for Business & Home Safety, effective disaster safety measures can protect lives and property, but only if action is taken before, rather than after, a catastrophe, such as an earthquake. Check out their website – www.disastersafety.org – for hints and tips for securing items in your home to prevent or reduce damage and injury. The earthquake endorsement will help you get things back to normal should your home suffer earthquake damage.
