Without someone tending to your house, certain risks become a lot more troublesome. Without someone maintaining your house while you’re away, an uncut lawn, full mailbox, and no lights on all day are clear signs to burglars that you are away on vacation. Also, who knows what is going to happen while you are away? Kids from the neighborhood could injure themselves on your property which will create liability issues for you. Your insurance policy may not cover you if you are away from the house for a certain amount of days. You may want to check with your insurance agent to see if you need to purchase a special vacant home insurance.
Also, before you go away there are some things that you should do to burglar proof your house.
- Make your house look occupied. Suspend your newspaper or have a neighbor collect it each morning. Set up timers that turn your lights on and off at different times. Also, hire someone to cut the lawn or shovel snow from the driveway if you are going away during the winter. Leave a car in the driveway and if you take your car ask a neighbor to park their car in your driveway. Do no change you telephone message to say you are away and make sure to turn off your computer and disconnect it from the internet. Make sure you let your neighbors know that you are planning on going away. They will be able to keep an eye out for any unusual activity. Lastly, do a complete check of your home to make sure that everything is secure.
