It’s a different kind of identity crisis: Approximately 9 percent of Americans have been the victim of identity theft, according to The National Study on Medical Identity Theft, conducted by the Traverse City, Mich.-based research firm Ponemon Institute.

The most common loss is credit card fraud, but other forms of theft included obtaining employment under a stolen name, debit card fraud, and theft of funds from banks and other financial institutions.

Medical identity theft was reported by 6 percent of the 156,000 survey respondents, resulting in an average cost of $20,000 to consumers, as well as the potential for mistakes in treatment.

The Ponemon Institute estimates that 24.5 million Americans have experienced identity theft, and 1.42 million have suffered medical ID theft.  Yet most homeowner insurance policies do not automatically cover Identity Theft.
