Your insurance company provides an adjuster at No Charge To You!

A simple loss such as road service, windshield damage is assigned to an inside adjuster. Claims of this nature are handled by phone or by mail and generally settled very quickly.

Complex losses involving other parties, property damage or total losses are assigned to a claims supervisor who checks for coverage and assigns a claims handler.

A claims handler may be a field adjuster, inside claims representative, material damage adjuster or property damage specialist. These individuals work to investigate the cause of the damage, make an estimate, set a reserve and then work with you, the insured and/or an outside contractor to come to a satisfactory settlement.

Adjusters who have no relationship with your insurance company and charge a fee for their service also may contact you. These are known as public adjusters. Public adjusters may charge you as much as 15% of the total value of your settlement for their services. The fee isn’t covered by your insurance policy. Sometimes these individuals will make themselves available following a major disaster and will discuss representing you regarding your claim.

Before you make this decision, it is best to speak to your agent to discuss the claims handling process. If you are not happy with how your claim is handled a phone call to your agent is the best way to keep communication flowing. Most of the time it is a mis-understanding that can be resolved quickly and without costing you 15% of your settlement!
